Research

Alfonso Carrillo’s research focuses on the development of efficient redox materials for solar-to-fuel conversion and the kinetic study of the reactions involved in such process. Namely, reduction and oxidation reactions of perovskites are under investigation for such a purpose. The solar-driven step is the reduction of a perovskite (ABO3) in which lattice oxygen is released at high temperatures, creating oxygen vacancies in the perovskite structure. In the backward step, re-oxidation is performed under CO2 and water presence, process in which the oxygen vacancies of the reduced perovskite are filled again uptaking oxygen from CO2 and water molecules, which in turn results in the formation of CO and H2.
For this application, perovskite materials that enable production of syngas with high efficiencies while presenting long-term chemical stability are sought.
